ViewMyCurrency 0.3895 released with support for Firefox 2

Wednesday, 25th October at 4:53 pm 55 comments

Major changes

  • Added: Support for Firefox 2

Minor Changes:

  • Changed: ‘Convert Text’ toolbar is now ‘Popup convert’ with shortcut to Ctrl-Shift-P. (Ctrl-Shift-T is “undo close tab” in Firefox 2)
  • Added: The symbol ‘/’ as now treated as a boundary character. Thanks Alex.
  • Fixed: Could not handle COP rate from Google (failing to parse 2 300). Thanks Jair.
  • Added: Support for multiple profiles. This will allow symbols like the ‘$’ to be handled differently depending on the current domain. The code is in place but not yet used so users should not notice any changes from previous versions.

Please let me know if you have any problems.

Bug: Japanese “Yen” mixed up with Chinese “Yuen”

Hi, Japanese “Yen” should be ‘¥’ with 2 cross strokes rather than ‘Ұ’ with 1 cross stroke for the Chinese “Yuen”. Please test on http://www.amazon.co.jp. Thanks for making this superb extension.

Thanks for this add-on! Works perfectly with Yen, USD & Euro. Having some troubles, though, with converting Korean Won into Euro, see for example here: http://www.vega-mall.com/

I don’t know if VMC uses the currency symbol as an indicator, but in this case it is 원 instead of the latinised ₩.

Feedback: Won’t dare open firefox without it! Excelent for online shopping!

Before I had to have a tab opened over at http://www.xe.com for calculating prices in foreing currency (mostly pounds->euro) and with it I had to endure the constant refreshes and page loadings… Time is money and this little addon has saved me a lot of money 😉
Couldm’t be more simple to use!

    Thanks for this great addon!

Hi, Though working perfectly, I see that the extension is showing INR(Indian Rupee) as Rp in the status bar. It should be Rs or INR.

Works superbly while converting world currencies to Indian Rupees. This has saved a lot of headache for me while shopping. Else, normally I need to keep my windows calculator open and keep on alt+tabing between it.

One thing, the ‘Rs’ int he webpages seem to have a stroke across R in the Rs, thus hindering readability. Can this be fixed?

    Feedback: Thank You So Much!

This is the best extention I´ve ever tried! Before I´ve tried other extentions, but none were really time- or work-conserving for me, so I just regarded extentions as unneccesary gadgets essentially for geeks.

But then I saw this extention and it really saves me a lot of work! I´m a student, so I often browse the Amazon.co.uk site to check if they have the books I need at a lower price than I can get them here in Norway. For this to work, I have to be able to convert the price at the Amazon.co.uk site to NOK. At first (about a year ago) Amazon had this feature on their pages, it was possible to set your preferred currency, but now — for some odd reason — they´ve removed this feature. So then I was back to using a second window with a currency converter — and _a lot_ of copy and pasting and switching back and forth between windows!

Your tool does exactly what I want, and it saves me a lot of work! Now it´s fun to browse the Amazon pages again, not just hard work!

    Thank You again!

Bug: Euro[x] emission standards treated as prices

European Union standards on exhaust emissions for vehicles are known as Euro3 and Euro4 (Euro2 or 1 might exist, but are rarely mentioned). These get mentioned quite a bit because they tend to have tax consequences. ViewMyCurrency matches them as Euro prices.

    Hiya,

A great extension, however, the version in the add-on site at Mozilla doesn’t install correctly on firefox 2. the max version appears to be incorrect.

But does work once this is sorted (using Mr Tech Local install add-on to get around max version issues.
Otherwise essential if your in the UK and want to check Euro prices

Request: Option to not convert values in and tags

I do a lot of coding and viewing code online in forums and the like. However, the dollar sign is quite common in coding and it would be great if you could add an option so that your fantastic extension doesn't convert values that are wrapped in or HTML tags.

    Thanks 🙂

So often the displayed amount is plus VAT. We know your ToDo-list is very long, but we are impressed with this extension and will very much like ViewMyCurrency to auto-add VAT, without removing the old number: DKK 180,00 [VAT 46,00] ($30).

    Hi Kosta,

    These steps might help:

    * Uninstall ViewMyCurrency
    * Open Firefox, and type ‘about:config’ in the address bar
    * Type ‘ViewMyCurrency’ in the filter box, you should see about 20 items
    * Find the following items
    – sourceCurrencyList
    – targetCurrencyList
    – target_currency_code
    * Right-click on each one and choose ‘reset’
    * Restart Firefox
    * Re-install ViewMyCurrency

Let me know if it works out.

In the release version in FF1.5 I could cycle between 2 preferred currencies, but now I can no longer do that in FF2.0 alpha version.

I am British and living France I often want to convert to either Euros or GBP. Could you restore that feature?

Thanks for a very useful addon!

  • 34. Will Moffat  |  Monday, 15th January at 4:47 pm

Hi Chris, you should be able to convert to as many currencies as you want (this feature hasn’t changed). Go to ViewMyCurrency / Options / Change My Currency and add both Euro and GBP.

Bug: can not update the list of currencies

I have installed the plug-in since months and i was very happy to use it. Since some weeks, i can not update the currencies in the “option” pop-up. Perhaps the connection or something else. What can i verify to find the problem ? When i click on “Update now” button, i have just a “NaN” in place of the conversion value. Thank you in advance for your help.

One of the most useful extensions I’ve used so far !!

Unfortunately I’ve encountered a very severe bug. At least it seems that viewmycurrency is the extension which causes my problem.
The problem: the clipboard (ctrl + v and ctrl + c) stops working, when viewmycurrency is activated. Maybe it’s an incompability with one of my other extensions – if you want I can post my other extensions.
Anyway: great work, thank you very much, I hope you find a solution for this strange problem..

    my browser – version:

    Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.8.1.1) Gecko/20061204 Firefox/2.0.0.1

  • 47. Will Moffat  |  Tuesday, 20th February at 4:21 pm

Dear Hermann, I haven’t seen that problem before. In the next few days I will release a new version. If that doesn’t fix the problem then please let me know. Thanks!

  • 48. Will Moffat  |  Tuesday, 20th February at 4:29 pm

Hi mfr, It’s a good idea but I think it would be quite confusing if all numbers on a page were treated as currencies and converted. Do you use the ‘right-click conversion’ feature? if you select some text on a page and then right-click you can convert numbers without currency symbols. Let me know what you think.

  • 49. Hermann Withalm  |  Tuesday, 20th February at 5:12 pm

All right, thanks – I am really looking forward !

  • 50. Hermann Withalm  |  Tuesday, 20th February at 6:45 pm

Wow – I’m really very, very sorry. I just realized, that it isn’t viewmycurrency’s fault. I had deactivated another extension (Roboform) together with viewmycurrency and forgot about it. It seems that my problem is in fact caused by Roboform…Once again: Very sorry !!

  • 51. Will Moffat  |  Tuesday, 20th February at 7:44 pm

Dear Hermann, no problem. Thanks for letting me know that ViewMyCurrency works OK.

  • 52. Celeritas  |  Sunday, 25th February at 8:01 am

I love this extension, but can’t get it to work with firefox 2.0.0.2. I have the same trouble as Kosta. I went through your suggested fix but no luck. I noted viewcurrency has an interaction with Tab Mixer, would this stop viewcurrency from installing properly?

  • 53. Celeritas  |  Sunday, 25th February at 9:22 am

Went through ff safemode and disabled all add ons, then enabled viewmycurrency. Now it works, even though I have re-enabled Tab Mixer. I am so happy. Thankyou so much Will for making my day easy. Looking forward to fixing the dollar sign issue as I live in New Zealand, where we also use dollars. Thanks for all your hard work.

  • 54. Will Moffat  |  Sunday, 25th February at 10:07 am

Hi Celeritas, did you re-enable all your extensions or did you find one which conflicted with ViewMyCurrency?
I’m making good progress on the dollar sign issue, check back this week for an update.

  • 55. Celeritas  |  Friday, 9th March at 2:20 am

    Hi Will
Yes I re-enabled all my extensions and none conflicted. Thanks so much again.
