I don’t know who the nostalgic people are but I am not – so I won’t use the option to translate EUR to DEM

If the functionality does not suffer then it is fine for me to have it in

  • 2. RaynerApe  |  Wednesday, 8th March at 4:49 pm

It seems to me the author of this exceptionally useful extension is running out of ideas 🙂 Which is a good thing, because ViewMyCurrency is work of perfection. Maybe it would be great to channel that enthusiasm to another project?

  • 3. Will Moffat  |  Wednesday, 8th March at 5:06 pm

HI RaynerApe, thanks for your kind words but don’t worry there’s plenty more work to do on ViewMyCurrency.
Marc: It’s surprising how many people still think in the old currencies, just today somebody told me how much their holiday cost in Belgian Francs. Plus, there is a certain delightful irony in using the latest web technologies to turn back time. 😉

Request: Retrieve default currency info from Windows registry

On Windows, the system currency code and how to display it is specified in the Control Panel. How about using the settings specified there in ViewMyCurrency – or at least use the values as default values in ViewMyCurrency.

See http://www.jsifaq.com/SUBA/tip0300/rh0311.htm for info about the available registry values.

Hi Christian, good idea. Added to the ToDo list

  • 6. pheloxi  |  Thursday, 9th March at 10:40 am

seeing the old European currencies in the “first install” is very strange, because Euro currency more than 7 years old (1 January 1999). Euro coins and notes are being used for more than 4 years now (1 January 2002).

please change that, if some one wants to see an old European currencies than he/she can add then later.

for the people who do not like, but use the Euro grow up! we have it and will be using it!

VMC still one one of the most useful firefox extension.

  • 7. Rufus  |  Thursday, 9th March at 5:43 pm

    Why round up euros convertions?

We have the decimals, then I prefer to see the right convertion from $ xx.xx to € xx.xx instead to € xx

I agree with Rufus. I like the decimals when numbers are above 10.

But anyway, thanks for your work

  • 10. Will Moffat  |  Monday, 13th March at 4:14 pm

Hi Marc, thanks for the bug report. There is a typo on the Kariega web page, if you view the HTML source then the price is actually R1 +some html + 500.

ViewMyCurrency could cope with R + html+1500. But putting HTML between the digits makes it impossible to know if they go together.

Rufus, Jose, I’ll make the rounding into a user option in the next release.

    Bug: Wrong conversion

Some small conversion error in the PHP Pear documentation but it seems like one of those irresolvable problems. It may be useful to consider these types of errors when you fix the $ sign issue: not all $ signs are currencies.

What is the blacklist? And why is Engadget blacklisted? Where can you edit the blacklist?

    Thanks for the great work!

  • 16. Will Moffat  |  Monday, 27th March at 4:41 pm

Hi Mattias: Well spotted! I’m working on having different settings per domain name. So for example ViewMyCurrency could turn off automatically if you access your online banking or if you visit this page to read the bug reports. This site is currently the only black-listed page and you can’t edit the list yet. (Engadget probably wasn’t blacklisted, but there is a bug in the tooltip message) Expect developments on this in the next week or so.

  • 20. Thomas  |  Friday, 12th May at 5:57 pm

Hmmmm, been having some problems with viewmycurrency recently and I don’t know exactly where it comes from.
The main symptoms being : – from time to time, the browser opens with a blank page and cannot load any webpage at all. Closing and opening FF again fixes it.
    – with some combinations of extensions, it opens VMC’s first run dialog every time FF is run (I tried with tab mix plus and it did that)

Are these known problems? Otherwise, I’ll submit a more complete bug report. I think it did that with older version too.
It’s a shame, I love viewmycurrency so much, really useful extension 😦
    Thanks

Hi Thomas, I haven’t seen these problems before so thanks for letting me know. I’ve sent you an email about how to get in touch.

Bug: When i use google as quote source it fail

When i choose google as quote source and i choose COP (Colombian Pesos) as my default currency. It show very strange numbers.

    Example:

Now it show 1 USD = 2 COP when the result in Google is

    Request: convert text toolbar

Allow “To:” currency to be changed, same as “From:” currency list. I default to GBP currency so I can convert any page to GBP but sometimes I want to convert GBP to Kenya Shillings KES or maybe to USD so it would be handy if I could highlight text then convert from GBP to selected currency.

Many thanks for a great firefox extension.

Request: Support range for rate greater than 10000

    Dear sir,

First of all, I would like to say thank you for your useful extension.

I met this problem when try to use your extension because I’m VietNamese.

Currently, your extension not support currency rate for my currency because your range [0…10000] isn’t suitable with our country.
    For example: in today (31-May-2006)
    + 1USD = 15957.5 VietNam dong (VND)
    + 1EUR = 20550.8652 VND
    ….

Would you please remove this constrain or allow user can be re-define this range?

Anyway, thanks for your works. I hope to have more and more your useful extension.

    VietNam, 31-05-2006
    Minh Truong

PS: I thinks Metric and Timezone conversion are also useful so if you can, please support those conversion asap. And, :), maybe your extension name must be changed to ViewMyRegion :))

I looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Hi Kyle: the only way to change the keyboard shortcuts is to edit the source code. It's actually not that hard.
Goto your Firefox profile directory (On windows it's this, although the last letters will be different)

    C:\Documents and Settings\Will\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\j88qfu77

    Inside the profile dir, goto:
    extensions\{b062dc7a-216b-431e-b48b-3e1c98afca53}\ chrome\viewmycurrency\content
The GUI is defined in WILL_ViewMyCurrencyOverlay.xul
And you need to edit the part that says control, shift" key="t"
    and then restart Firefox.

If this doesn't solve your problem, or it's too technical then I'm hoping to support the Keyconfig extension in a future release.

Let me know if this helps.

  • 36. Will Moffat  |  Saturday, 17th June at 8:26 am

Hi Theo: Thanks for the bug report. Right now any error during initialisation causes the startup wizard to rerun but this is hiding the real problem. I’ll change the behaviour in the next release so that it just generates an error and dies. Then maybe we can see what’s wrong.

    Scroll Bar bug —
running WindowsXP and 34 other Firefox extensions, but uninstalled and reinstalled them all to make sure it was this one causing it.

The ViewMyCurrency extension, both the current and the alpha version both, cause the same problem while browsing. The right-side scroll bar disappears on certain sites: eBay, Mozilla add-ons page. Seems like the extension might be telling the page that it is finished loading too early, before it is done resizing and replacing the vertical scrollbar. Cannot resize browser to fix, although sometimes the scrollbar will reappear when browser is maximized. Had to uninstall the extension, looks really good otherwise, would like to know when it’s fixed.

Bug: Precision w/ numbers above 10 (alpha release)

I don’t understand why, does the alpha realese converts units from pounds to euros with unit precision, and the stable release converts with decimal precision (someting that i like), could you at least give the user the choice or revert to default behavior. Also, now I can’t revert to the stable release, because it gives me a error in the conversion, so could you also make the unisntall better so it does not leave any trace behind?
    Thank you.

view my currency has stopped working for me. i can’t get configuration to finish. i use ff 1506.

when i mouseover the “off” msg in the status bar i get the message “setup wizard is running”. and clicking “off” doesn’t turn it on, like it used to.

i’d like to go back to a previous version that works, but i don’t know what to go back to. what and where is a stable version?

    thanks
    ken

    Hi Ken,

Hmm … not sure what’s causing that problem and unfortuantely I’m in Riga right now without my laptop. You could try installing the COP version (see comment 30 above). If that doesn’t work out then ping me again in 10 days and I’ll look into it.
    regards,

Request: Use ccLD domain name to determine page currency

Great idea. Please assume that pages with country domain name are in local currency e.g. .au is A$, .nz is NZ$. And for .com is US$. And allow user to pick currency prefix e.g. I would like prices to show US$, NZ$. My final thought, add a Paypal donate button on your blog, and I will donate you some money for your efforts. Thanks.

Your nice plugin does not work with Firefox 2.0 RC3…

  • 51. max  |  Tuesday, 24th October at 5:28 am

Please update this extension to be compatible with the new full release v2.0.

Like Enrico says it doesn’t support FireFox 2.0 – So i would like to know if you’ve got an ETA on a compatible version? 🙂
